If you have never actually lived in a Milwaukee zip code, you may have a very limited idea of just what the city is all about. Milwaukee has a strong reputation as a major player in the beer industry as well as in manufacturing, and those are the first things people still think of when they hear the name of Wisconsin's biggest city.

While both industries have been huge in Milwaukee's past, though, allowing countless captains of industry to make their fortunes, the city is considerably more diverse than you have been led to believe. In fact, local government has taken great pains over the last decade to expand the city's image, reflecting the more upscale image of its downtown, where executives carrying Blackberry leather cases roam each lunch hour. Today, it can rightly be said that Milwaukee is a city with something to offer everyone. Let's take a look at some highlights.

Downtown

We aren't exaggerating when we say that Milwaukee's downtown core is one of the most beautiful in the entire United States. Original architecture lines the main streets, particularly noticeable along the Riverwalk. This is one of the main attractions of the city for those who love to spend time walking along the waterfront and taking advantage of the many opportunities it affords. You can take in the art displays which range from amateurs fresh from faux painting instruction to those by professional local artists.

The Riverwalk is also lined with many small cafes and, yes, brewpubs as well. We didn't say the city wanted to pull its roots out, only expand them! Enjoy a pint of a city original as you take in the aquarium decorations and other touches that give these businesses their independent feel.

Milwaukee Art Museum

Recent upgrades to this facility have earned Milwaukee acclaim from the international realm. Another of the city's architectural masterpieces, the museum has a number of different permanent and temporary exhibits in a diverse range of art.

Old Town

Those interested in the history of the city will love to visit the recently refurbished Old Town in the heart of Milwaukee. You can still see business such as pawn shops where you can exchange cash for jewelry, but the face-lifts to the building and a greater popularity with residents have given this section a whole new life. Old breweries have been converted to modern lofts and condos, and of course Milwaukee Auditorium hosts many events here.

City of Festivals

As you might expect from its history in breweries, Milwaukee is also a city that loves to party. It has earned the nickname City of Festivals due to the large number of special events held here each year. Among the most unique is Trainfest, the largest model train show in the country. The party includes prizes from trips to Hawaii to gift certificates for the day spa. Birmingham to Fargo, model enthusiasts from all over flock here each year.
